The Department of Geography and Geology was created in 1923. But in 1948 they were separated and the Department of Geology came into existence. Currently there are 16 academic staffmembersat the Department. The aim of the academic programme of the Department of Geology is to offer a comprehensive range of degrees to suit the varied aims and academic backgrounds of the students.The Department of Geology offers courses leading to Master of Science, Master of Research and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in geological science. The Master of Sciencedegree in Geology is a 2-year course. Students can specialize in:

The Doctor of Philosophy in Geology(Ph.D) course is eligible for those who have obtained their Master degree and passed the entrance examinations. After a year of preliminary course work they must finishtheir course in three years. The programme offers doctoral degrees in Paleontology, Sedimentology, Regional Geology, Economics and Mining Geology and Hydrogeology.
The Department of Geology also conducts a diploma course on Applied Geology in collaboration with the Department of Applied Geology of the Ministry of Mines. The post graduate Diploma in Applied Geology specializes in such areas as Gemmology, Engineering Geology,Hydrogeology, Petroleum Geology and Economic and Mining Geology. The Department is an active participantin the HRDprogrammes of the Yangon University and offers certificate and diploma courses for both the students and interested persons from the private sector. These series of courses are on basic and advanced gems identification, geotechnical engineering etc. and are from three to six months duration. The staff of the Department also conduct field researches in basic and applied geological sciences. The most important field expedition to date is the researches on primate fossils of Pondaung region in collaboration with other international organizations. Furthermore the Department also provides technical services to private and government sectors organizations and enterprises in various geo-technical servicesTwo of the most notable features of the Department are the establishment of the Dr.Tha Hla Scholarship and the Dr. Myint Lwin Thein Prize. They are awarded annually to the outstanding undergraduate students as an appreciation of their academic endeavour and performance. The Department also maintains a library, a geological museum and is equipped with a state-of- 21 the-art laboratory.

Background of Department
As an annex to the Department of Geography in 1920, the study of geology at the University of Yangon began in 1923.
There was no Myanmar geologist at all prior to the 2nd World War.
The study of Geology commenced earnestly after WW II, under the guidance of Professor Dr Tha Hla
Department of geology was established as an independent department in 1948.
Currently the department is involved in the basic academic activities, scientific research, and community services.
