Department of History

Established in 1920 the Department has been associated with the founding of Yangon University ever since. The History Department aimsto produce graduates and newgenerations of historians who can establish human relationships that are in harmony and confident for the development of the country. For these aims and objectives the History Department offers courses leading to Master of Arts, Master of Research and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in history. Master degree in History candidates are required to attend a two years full time course and to successfully pass the examinations held at the end of each semester.

A candidate for the Master's degree in Research is required to present a one year thesis work and must demonstrate familiarity with the various researchmethods in this field, an ability to work independently and also the ability to present the results of theirinvestigations effectively. The courses include:

  • International Relations during the Cold War period
  • Contemporary international relations in the post-Cold War period
  • Contemporary United States
  • Contemporary Europe
  • Traditional Statecraft in Southeast Asia
  • Theravada Buddhism in Southeast Asia
  • Myanmar Art and Architecture
  • Contemporary China
  • Contemporary Japan
  • Nation building in Contemporary Southeast Asia
  • Contemporary International relations of Southeast Asia
  • Historiography of Southeast Asia
  • Contemporary Myanmar (1962-1997)
  • Sources of Myanmar History
  • Research Methodology

A Ph.D degree is also available for students who are in possession of a Master degree inHistory and able to present a thesis work of significant contribution in the chosen field. A students who hold an honours degree plus a Master's degree in History and who has successfully passed the entrance examinations as well as the Ph.D Preliminary Examinations can enroll in the preliminary Course. The candidates must finish the Ph.D dissertation in four years after the preliminaryexaminations and also satisfy the examiners that it has made a significant contribution to the knowledge and understanding of History.

They are required appear for four papers:

  • Political History of Myanmar
  • Social History of Myanmar
  • Economic History of Myanmar
  • Cultural History of Myanmar

There are 54 academic staff in the Department headed by aProfessor and Head of Department. The teaching staff is alsoengaged in research programmes in various aspects of Myanmar and world history.
