Department of International Relations

This is a relatively new department as it was established only in 1984. There are 28 teaching staffs at the Department for 2013-2014 academic year. The Department offers courses leading to Diploma in International Relations, Master of Arts, Master of Research and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) degree. The studies cover governmental systems and politics, major political, economic, environmental and social issues in international relations around the world.

The Master of Arts in International Relations is open to all Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in International Relations degree holders who are eligible to proceed Master classes.

The Master degree course offers the following modules:

The Master of Arts degree is offered in the South East Asia and Pacific studies also. The Master degree course offers the following modules:

  • ASEAN Organizational Structure and Decision-Making

  • ASEAN Legal Documents
  • Political and Security Cooperation in ASEAN
  • Introduction to Southeast Asian literature
  • Development of Anthropology and Socio-cultural Changes in ASEAN countries
  • Archeology of Mainland Southeast Asia
  • Economic Cooperation in ASEAN
  • ASEAN Functional cooperation
  • Regional analysis of Southeast Asia
  • Comparative Study on ASEAN Constitutions
  • ASEAN External Relations
  • Southeast Asia's value and belief systems
  • A Philosophical Study of Southeast Asian Culture
  • Pali Literature in Myanmar

With regard to Ph.D course, the candidate must study four modules: Myanmar Foreign Policy, Myanmar and UN, Regional Development in   Southeast Asia, Conventions, Treaties and Agreements. Instructions include lecture attendance, and presentation of assignments at seminars. All Master's degree candidates must pass bi-annual examinations and complete 16 modules within two academic years.

The Bachelor of Arts in South East Asia and Pacific Studies {B.A (SEAP)} is available under the HRD programme . Apart from compulsory Myanmar language and English, the students study the following courses:

  • ASEAN institutional structure and decision-making
  • Regionalism and regional organizations in Southeast Asia
  • Geology of Southeast Asia
  • Cultural Anthropology of Southeast Asia

  • Functional cooperation of ASEAN
  • Contemporary history of Southeast Asia
  • Culture and society in ASEAN

  • Cultural Heritage of Southeast Asia
  • Political and Security Cooperation in ASEAN
  • Economic Cooperation in ASEAN

Capacity Building

The Department of International Relations also provides lectures for other ministries and institutions including National Defence College, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Home Affairs and Civil Service Selection Board. The Department has well-qualified academic staffs with good teaching background and research interests. The research areas include the United Nations in Myanmar, the role of Myanmar Women, ASEAN and Regional Integration, Official Development Assistance in Myanmar, Indo-Myanmar Relations, Myanmar-Japan Relations, Myanmar-China Relations, Comparative Politics of Myanmar and Other Countries in Southeast Asia, Non-traditional Security Issues , and Economic and Social Issues of Myanmar .

Training Programmes for IR Faculty

Since 2012, teaching staffs of IR are given training programme for upgrading teaching and research skill. This training programme is funded by Open Society Foundations. Under this programme, two Visiting Professors, one from Vienna University of Austria and another from Nagoya University gave intensive training to IR faculty members. There will also be another Visiting Professor Programme in this academic year (2013-2014). The professors will be from International University of Japan, Japan and Vienna University. The courses for this training focus on : Current Issues in Political Science, Foreign Policy Decision-Making Process and Developmental Studies.
