Department of English

The English Department dates back to 1920, the year when Yangon University became separatedfrom Calcutta (Kolkota) University. There are 33 Tutors, Asst. Lecturers, Lecturers, Associate Professors and Professors in the Department. Currently the English Department offers diploma and postgraduate courses on English up to an including Master of Arts, Master of Research and Ph.D degrees for students of English.

Many of these courses are full time courses and the mode of instruction is through lectures, self-study, discussions, paper presentations, written assignments and seminars. The student's progress is measured on the individual's active participation in discussions, paper presentations and seminars. However, assessments on written assignments and written examinations at the end of each semester are the main determinants for the conferment of Diploma and Master degrees.

For Master courses the following modules are offered:

  • Discourse Analysis
  • Literary Studies
  • Thematic Studies
  • Styl istics
  • Semantics
  • Psycholinguistics
  • Error Analysis
  • Developing Language and
  • Literary Skills

For a Diploma in English Language Teaching students take such papers as:

  • Developing Communicative Skills
  • Linguistics and grammar
  • Teaching of English as a Foreign Language
  • Language Studies

To obtain a Master of Research degree a student must carry outfulltime research work and submit a thesis on this work. Another requirement is that the student must be able to contribute
to the field of English Language Teaching through this research.

Students who wish to do a Doctoral course and who had received Masters Degree in English from a recognized university have to pass the entrance examination to attend the preliminary courses. But those who have received their Master of Research Degree can do the 1st year Preliminary Ph.D course.

They can specialize in:

  • Language in Education
  • Applied Linguistics
  • Literary Studies
  • Language in the Media

The English Department also offers Global English Course under the Yangon University Centre for Human Resource Development.

  • Diploma in English Course (Basic Level)
  • Diploma in English Course (Intermediate Level)
  • Diploma in English Course (Upper Intermediate Level)
  • Diploma in English Course (Advanced Level I)
  • Diploma in English Course (Advanced Level II)

Apart from functioning as a teaching department the English Department also provides in-service training in English language teaching consultancy, liaison and translation services etc for otheracademic departments under the Yangon University as well as for other government departments.

  • The extent to which English language is used in Myanmar
  • A study of effective means of developing oral fluency of students
  • Assessment systems used for English courses in the ASEAN countries
  • An in-depth investigation into inadequate oral fluency of Myanmar teachers and learners of English in the primary school level
  • The inclusion of indigenous languages in the school curricula of ASEAN countries
